Swede secures her third Major victory at Carnoustie
Golf Saudi and Aramco Team Series ambassador Anna Nordqvist has secured her third Major victory at the AIG Women's Open at Carnoustie Golf Links, with 12-under-par score of 276, sealing the title by a single shot. Her third day score of 65 (seven-under-par) was the lowest round of the weekend.
Starting the final day with a share of the lead at -9, Nordqvist led the overnight leaderboard alongside Dane Nanna Koerstz Madsen. A blemish free front nine of three birdies and six pars set Nordqvist up nicely for a thrilling finale. Despite a slight setback on hole 12 with a bogey, Nordqvist soon bounced back with a birdie on hole 14. However, Madsen kept the pressure on with back-to-back birdies on holes 11 and 12, only allowing Nordqvist back in with her own bogey on hole 15.
Both players then handled the pressure impressively with consecutive pars on holes 16 and 17 to setup the most dramatic of conclusions, beginning the last hole with scores both tied at -12. However, Nordqvist’s past form as a Major champion saw her through as she managed to ride the pressure and par the last.
Born in Eskilstuna, Sweden, Anna Nordqvist is the second Swedish player after Camilla Lennarth to join the Golf Saudi ranks, becoming an ambassador in 2020. Since turning professional in 2008, she has won eleven times including eight victories on the LPGA Tour and three on the Ladies European Tour.
In only her fifth start of the LPGA Tour, Nordqvist burst onto the scene by winning her first professional tournament and major, the LPGA Championship in Maryland in June 2009. Since then, she has increased her status as one of women’s golf’s highest rated players by winning a second major at the Evian Championship in 2017 and now a third at the AIG Women’s Open.
As an international ambassador for Golf Saudi and the Aramco Team Series, Anna Nordqvist is representing Golf Saudi in its extensive efforts to promote the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia globally as an exceptional golfing nation, as well as attracting young Saudis to the game.
Upon announcing her status as an Aramco Team Series ambassador last month, Nordqvist said: “I’m very proud to take on an ambassadorial role for the Aramco Team Series – tournaments that have already brought massive excitement to the Tour and which I believe have the power to really take women’s golf to that next level.
“The backing given by Aramco and Golf Saudi to these events is phenomenal and was something that the women’s game really needed. That support is allowing us to present a new picture of ladies golf and one which brings amateur golfers closer than ever to the action, which makes me proud to spread the message of the Aramco Team Series.
“ These tournaments are guaranteed to bring a new energy and intrigue to our game. ”
